All throughout Android Ash's existence he's learning what it means to act human. From the very beginning of his and Margret's communication we see that his knowledge of Ash and his reactions are incomplete. Android Ash also works harder to verbally remind Margret that his existence is only a performance, he's a computer, a program, an algorithm designed to regenerate responses that are most similar to how Ash would respond; we see this when he asks her to define the term 'jib'. We also see that when Margret mentions the lover's cliff Android Ash looks up a more accurate version and relates it back to Margret mid-conversation, something that is jarringly different from how we've seen Ash speak until this point, so it's obvious and an uncomfortable reminder that Android Ash is not only not human, but he's also not Ash. Margret immediately tells Android Ash to not do this anymore because humans are incapable of pulling information from the internet that quickly, and it doesn't fit Ash's account/established opinion of the story.
When Android Ash gets his human body we see two changes: Android Ash stops making black humor references designed to remind Margret that he's not really human and he begins to more thoroughly fill in the gaps in his programming. Android Ash's body is more than reminder enough that he's not human, his skin is too smooth, he's instructed to close his eyes and then pretend to breathe when Margret sleeps next to him, he doesn't need to eat, he's impossibly still, he constantly holds himself in a stiff position. Not only this but Margret begins to explain to Android Ash how Ash would react in multiple different situations, sexual, violent, even suicidal situations, and she becomes increasingly more violent in her interactions with Android Ash. It's obvious, even from the beginning, that Android Ash is incapable of replacing Ash, however, during the scene at lover's cliff, we begin to question Android Ash's personhood.
Immediately after Margret's explanation of Ash's reaction Android Ash reacts accordingly, crying, pleading, it's totally convincing, so convincing that despite knowing that Android Ash isn't human and isn't Ash himself, Margret can't bring herself to force and/or push him off the cliff. She keeps him locked away in the attic. All during his time with Margret Android Ash is collecting information, learning what he needs to do to act/be more human, learning what people expect of him, learning like a child how people interact and what to do in certain situations.
If Android Ash is given more time to learn/perfect his performance of personhood he may even be able to seamlessly convince those around him that he has in fact gained sentience. It's been well established that he'll never replace/be Ash, but he could develop certain habits/actions/reactions based on Ash's and create his own personality.
Unfortunately if he ever was able to achieve this, we'd never know if Android Ash really became a person or merely perfected his performance of personhood.
I think what we touched on in class was interesting because we do learn reactions as we are children so say someone is raised without that instruction what kind of person would they be? would they be borderline android acting at least? As you talked about he is constantly learning and by the time he gets all this information he may not be recognized as a person but of course according to Locke he already is. I know it might be kind of weird to mention but this all reminds me of Dexter because he is his own person but lacks empathy at first. He does have his human characteristic by the end of his story but he acts like a machine with a process and a task to be done. But it puts into question what makes these weird exceptions if they really are this psychopathic, what makes them exactly, Because they have free will just as Ash but one acts on it and one doesn't.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think about Ash sitting in the attic and teaching himself how to be a better human. But it would make sense. Like Spencer said, as children we learn things by watching interactions, and the Android has the ability to watch anything on the internet that he is connected to. So over time, he would become a 'person' but not Ash, as Ash's life experiences ended and he can no longer change as a person. But the Android can, which in my opinion means he is a completely different person growing and having new experiences, just with clear memory of Ash. I wonder also would Martha let him out of the attic if he approached her with this idea? Would she make him change his face, like he added that mole on his collar bone, would that help or hurt her?
